Human breastmilk

Human breastmilk is the only pure, unprocessed, natural food for a human baby. There are so many commercial interests, who wish to convince us that bottle-feeding is the norm, we have forgotten what a new phenomenon it is. Baby-formula was invented a mere one hundred years ago, and it was then considered such an abnormal thing to give a baby that you had to get a doctor’s prescription for it!

Breastmilk is the perfect food for a baby, designed by nature to have the exact balance of fats for the baby’s brain development and lots of mother’s antibodies. (A study completed in 2007 proved this point, showing that the fatty acids produced in breastmilk are absolutely crucial to a baby's brain development and can result in increasing its intelligence by as much as seven points!) Also, during this time, a baby will lay down the fat cells it will have for the rest of its life. The food a baby is fed during this period, affects the baby’s relationship with food and its metabolism, for the rest of its life.

Fruit baby food recipes

110 ml water
1 tbsp agar flakes* or gelatine
220 ml fruit puree
330 ml fruit juice

*Agar is derived from seaweed and is used as a thickener. You can find it in most health food stores. It is expensive, but a little goes a long way.

In a saucepan, combine the agar and water and stir until the flakes are dissolved.
Pour in the juice and heat for a couple of minutes, stirring continuously.
Pour into a suitable bowl and place into the refrigerator.
As the mixture starts to set, stir in the puree. You can use any fruit - I prefer to mix several fruits together. Avoid pineapple though - it doesn't set well.
Return to the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Baby care- Baby massage

Touch is the first sense developed by the embryo as it is rocked and massaged in the womb, surrounded by the amniotic fluid. As the baby is gradually pushed down the birth canal he or she is receiving a stimulating massage to prepare him or her to adapt to the new environment.
After babies have made their difficult journey into the world they need the constant reassurance of a loving touch.
Massage has been practiced for centuries in many cultures, and nowadays in parts of India, Pakistan, some African countries and the West Indies, massage is part of a baby's daily life. Babies are massaged almost as soon as they are born, often initially by their grandmothers.
The mother takes over the daily ritual when she feels fit. The practice of massage continues throughout life, and children and adults are frequently massaged. Massage creates a strong and loving link between mother, father and baby. The London obstetrician Yehudi Gordon states that 'massage helps parents communicate with their baby, thereby strengthening the bonding process'.
Touch is particularly important for premature babies and those in special care if bonding is to be established. Babies who are born by Cesarean section and thus are not massaged through the birth canal also require a great deal of touch.
Fast-birth babies who can be traumatized and shocked by the speed of the delivery also need massage. It assists in the physiological and emotional development of the child. Evidence suggests that babies who receive regular massage are subject to far fewer health problems. They also feed and sleep much better than those who receive no massage.
