Get in touch with Your Inner Child by Playing With a Child!

Remember Paper Dolls? I sure do. I probably had at least 50 different paper dolls throughout my childhood. I remember spending long hours on weekends, off in 'pretend-land', playing with my paper dolls. I couldn't wait to share that experience with my granddaughter. Since she is over 3 years old now I knew she would love the make-believe part of paper dolls but I worried how the clothing tabs would hold up under her not-so-gentle little fingers.

Children have to learn what is an appropriate amount of pressure to apply to different activities so this will develop with time. But for now, there is a wonderful set of toys from Melissa & Doug that allows a little one to play like paper dolls, but with sturdy thick wooden dolls that are magnetic. The Magnetic Dress-Up Dolls are fabulous for little fingers. We now have 3 sets of magnetic dress-up dolls at The Baby Store Plus and I gave one of them to Sydney to play with. She absolutely loved it! She played with her Maggie Leigh Wooden Dress-up Doll all day the first day and continued to play with it every day after.
There are three styles that we have, the Maggie Leigh that I gave Sydney, the Joey, so boys can play too, and the Abby & Emma double set. Each set comes in a pretty designed wooden divider tray to keep all the little parts & pieces organized. Each piece is magnetized so it easily attaches to the magnetic doll. The doll can be held in the little ones hands, laid out on a flat surface, or stood upright in the wooden stand that comes with each doll. Your little one can mix n match shirts, skirts, pants, dress, shoes and accessories for the girl dolls. The Joey doll comes with several career outfits so he can be a Super Hero, Firefighter, Policeman, a Knight, Construction Worker, and even a Pirate.
These Magnetic Dress-Up Dolls are recommended for children ages 3 and up. They do come with small pieces so if you have younger children you should supervise the parts when little ones are near.

The single dress-up dolls, Joey or Maggie Leigh are just $12.99 and the double set with Abby & Emma is just $19.99, and all are now available in our Online Store, as well as in our physical store in Cortez, Colorado.

Role Playing and Make-Believe with Melissa and Doug Toys

Little girls and boys love to role-play. Make-believe is the way they learn, that is why it is such a big part of kindergarten. I still have fond memories of pretending that I was a mommy with my baby dolls. I enjoyed it so much that even joined my daughters when they played, and now I get to do it all over again with my granddaughter Sydney.

She is just over 3 years old so she is just beginning to play make-believe. Discovering that she is now ready for role playing has opened a whole new area in my store. I have been seeking out fun toys that children of her age can use to play make-believe and be educational at the same time. In my search I discovered Melissa & Doug toys. Their products are made of such high quality that I really feel like I am getting a value for my money. Earlier this week I posted about the new Metal Shopping Cart from Melissa & Doug, and today I have also added some fun wooden foods that will be great to use with the shopping cart.

Starting with the basics, the Food Groups consists of 4 little food crates with real-looking wooden foods inside to help children learn about the four food groups as well as what makes a balanced diet. It is never too early to teach your children about the value of healthy eating. The Food Groups set contains: Bread Group: buns, sliced bread, dinner roll. Meat Group: steak, fish, hot dog, hamburger patty, egg. Dairy Group: cheeses, milk, butter. Fruit & Veggie Groups: lemon, tomato, banana, watermelon, orange, onion, and even a bottle of oil. All contained in four wooden crates.

Then to help your little one safely learn about cutting food, there is the Cutting Food set. This set contains 8 different wooden foods that your little one uses with the wooden knife and a cutting board to slice the food. When the knife goes through the pre-sliced areas the food even makes a neat "CRUNCH" sound! The foods can then be re-assembled and sliced again. With this set of food you can also teach your children about whole, part, and fractions.
Once your little chef learns about food groups and cutting food, she will be ready to test her baking skills with the Slice & Bake Cookie Set. This set comes beautifully packaged in a bright red box and includes: a colorful wooden set of 12 sliceable cookies, 12 toppings, a wooden knife and spatula, a cookie sheet and even a kitchen mitt for safe "low-calorie" play! The cookies all store inside of a durable dough tube.

These wooden food sets are sure to give your little one hours of fun! And because they are so durably made, they will last a very long time. You can purchase all of these Melissa & Doug products in our Online Store now for just $19.99 each. They are also available in our physical store located in Cortez Colorado.

Re-discover the child in you, by playing with a child!

Two Exciting New Products from Melissa & Doug Now Available at The Baby Store Plus

We just received a large shipment from Melissa & Doug. Have you heard of this toy company before? They are known for their quality products at affordable prices and so much more. I will have all of the new products added to our website (and store shelves) very soon, but I really wanted to make a special post to highlight a few of my personal favorites today. They are the Metal Shopping Cart and the Magnetic Responsibility Chart. The Metal Shopping Cart is so neat. I bought one for my granddaughter to play with in my store. She loves shopping and I thought it would be fun for her to have a real-looking shopping cart in the store to play with. As it turned out, the Shopping Cart has become both of my grandkids favorite toy that gets played with every single day! I can't say that about any other toy that they have...and they have way too many! I guess that is what happens when your grandmother owns a baby store huh?

We were so impressed with the quality of the shopping cart that I knew it was definitely a product I wanted to offer my customers. It is made of real metal, just like the real carts. It also has the fold down plastic seat for a 'baby doll', just like the real carts. The wheels are beefy rubber and swivel in the front, just like the real carts! The only real difference between this cart and a real-thing is that this one is just the right size for little ones.

It is super easy to assemble with just a hex key, that is also included. And best of all, it is totally affordable at just $49.95! This toy is so sturdy, I think I could probably sit in the basket and be pushed around without hurting it one bit...although I am not admitting to doing that, nor am I recommending that you do it.

The Metal Shopping Cart is Now Available in our Online Store as well as our physical store in Cortez, Colorado.

The other featured Melissa & Doug product is the Magnetic Responsibility Chart. It is really more than a chart of chores...it is an aide to teach your children about personal responsibility too. The wood framed chart boards (there are two boards) are each approximately 16" wide by 12" tall. They are hinged together with 2 sturdy straps, with the dry-erase board in the lower position.
The upper board has an area to place the 'Responsibility or Goal' magnets along the left side. The magnets say things like: Load Dishwasher, Set Table, Help with Indoor Chores, as well as Apologize to Someone, Say Please and Thank You, Take Care of Pet, Don't Use Bad Language and many more. Under each day of the week there are places to put the 'Reward Magnet Dots' that say encouraging things like, Awesome, Great Job, Well Done, Way to Go, and many more.

The lower board is a dry-erase board and is also magnetic so it makes for a great place to keep your yet-unused magnets. As your child accomplishes each Responsibility or Goal, you take a magnet dot from the lower section that best fits the praise you wish to give, and place it on that day. Then your child can easily see how well they have been doing all week long. I love how the chart uses positive reinforcement rather than 'a list of chores'.

This is also great for children that are not even reading yet because each magnet has images that depict the task or activity and the reward dots have different happy faces with each written compliment for their behavior. If I were going to take one of the Reward Dots and use it to rate this product, I think I would choose 'AWESOME!"

The Magnetic Responsibility Chart is now available in our Online Store for $19.95 each. It is recommended for kids ages 3 years and up.

Look for more Featured Newest Arrivals to be posted all this week (and probably even next week too)...as I am working as fast as I can get them added to our website.

Bath Time Fun with Boon

Bath is Fun time for little ones. Getting clean is just something that happens because they are splashing around in the water, but the real fun is in the toys and the bubbles. A Toddler never objects to taking a bath. My granddaughter would even start stripping and running to the bathroom if you even spelled the word. Enjoy it moms because in a few years, when they have outgrown bath toys you will have to remind them that it is bath time. They will argue that there is no point, they are "just going to get dirty again tomorrow".

To make bath time lots of fun we have some Odd Ducks to toss in your little ones next bath. But these ducks by Boon, Inc are Not Your Average Rubber Ducky's. They have bold colors with unique prints, and funny shapes that make the each act a little different in the water. Let me introduce you to Bob, Jane, Slim, and Squish.

They are completely PVC and Phthalate Free, and No BPA either! These guys are the Hippest Ducks in the Tub!

You can find all of the Odd Ducks in our Online Store, as well as in our brick & mortar shop located in Cortez, Colorado, for just $5.99 each.

And....

To make bath time not only Safe, but a Bubbly Bunch of Fun, we also offer you the Flo Water Deflector and Protective Cover, as well as Bubble Bath Dispenser! Flo provides a simple solution to several bath time challenges. This unique product diverts the flow of water, creating a gentle waterfall, while providing a protective faucet cover to help guard against injury. And the Flo also functions as a bubble bath dispenser.

Flo attaches easily to the bathtub faucet with a spring-activated grip that requires no assembly or special installation. When the water is turned on, it’s diverted into a stream that extends up to 12 inches in front of the faucet, creating a gentle waterfall and making rinsing hair easy. The soft material on the front edge of Flo helps protect against injuries caused by bumping or scraping against the faucet. Rambunctious little ones can easily injure themselves by falling into an uncovered faucet. So this is a great safety device too.

Parents can fill the bubble bath reservoir and let children dispense bubbles into the water by pressing the button on the front. Heck, that is even fun for us adults.

We have the Flo in three bright colors of Green, Blue, and Pink available for just $14.99 each. Stop by the store to pick one up, or order one in our Online Store where we promise shipment within 1 business day...but usually ship the same day!

So my advice to de-stress your day
as well as your little ones is this:
Fill up the bath tub, add at least one toddler, toss in a few fun Odd Ducks, push the Bubble Button, and Have a Great Time!!

I Love Entering and Especially Winning Giveaways!

I love Giveaways, both hosting them and entering them. But especially Winning Them! Sometimes the host thinks its a little strange that The Baby Store Plus is entering their giveaways (I have actually had a few say that to me), but I am a real person too. I have grandchildren that I like to win things for and I also like to read reviews about new products that I might consider putting in my store. So if I win, I get to test the product out myself before ordering 12 cases of them to discover that the product quality is only so-so...or on the flip side, if I Love, Love, Love a product that I win, then I feel confident in buy 12 cases to put in my store and share with other mama's & grandmama's.

Here are a few that I have won recently and a little follow up to each prize:

I won a Bum Essentials Bumbino All In 2 Cloth Diaper from Dirty Diaper Laundry blog. I have been on a cloth diaper mission recently. Trying to figure our what cloth diaper brands I want to carry in my store. To qualify as a product that I will carry, first it has to be a quality product, and second, the company has to have people running it that I enjoy working with. So the best way for me to determine what cloth diaper brands I will stock in my store is to actually use the product myself. I had not tied the Bum Essentials diapers yet, although I was hearing a lot about them in blogs and on twitter so I really wanted to try one. I entered Kims giveaway and Won! The diaper arrived so fast, I wasn't even expecting it for a few more days at least. I took it home and went through the pre-washing process and eagerly used it on my grandson the next day at work...and I Loved It! So much so that I am now going to carry them in my store! Look for them to arrive Very Soon! Thank you Dirty Diaper Laundry and Bum Essentials!

I entered a Review/Giveaway for Rockin Green Soap hosted by Our Life blog. I had already tried a sample size packet of Rockin Green Soap that I received with a purchase of Cloth Mama pads from Talulah Bean, and I really loved the smell of my laundry after. I used it on some sheets that my dog bleed ALL over when he cut is paw. Rockin Green removed every last drop of blood! I knew that I wanted more of this product, so for fun I entered the giveaway and won. Before the bag even arrived, (which is did right away) I decided that I wanted this product for my store. So you can look for it to arrive this week at The Baby Store Plus. Also expect to receive a Free Sample with all future purchases of cloth diapers from us! Thank you Rockin Green Soap and Our Life blog!

I entered a review/giveaway for a Loop-2-Loop buckle-less belt for toddlers made by an Etsy mom, hosted by Toddler Mama's blog. I thought these were a very neat idea for toddlers who are tall and slim like my granddaughter Sydney. If she finds pants that fit in the waist they are so short they look like capri pants, so we have to get them long enough and use something to gather up the waist so they are not saggin and baggin all day. We love the Dapper Snappers that we currently use (and carry in our store), but we thought we'd try the Loop-2-Loop too. I chose the pink with white snaps since Sydney loves anything pink. They arrived pretty fast and we tried them out the very day they arrived. I loved them. I really wanted to carry them in my store along with the Dapper Snappers, however there are so many crazy federal requirements for lead and other toxins that I cannot carry anything that doesn't have certificates of testing compliance. Since she is small business she doesn't have any testing done on her products yet....but she should contact me once she does...I love them!

I won a Freckles Galore Crayon Roll-up (another great Etsy mom) hosted in a review/giveaway by Twee Poppets blog. My granddaughter chose the Ladybug Garden print...once again because it is really 'pink' and has ladybugs. As soon as it arrived Sydney opened it up and we happily discovered that she had included brand new crayons too! I did not expect that. Sydney was just oohing and awwing at it for quite a while. We were going on a long drive the next day so we took the Crayon Roll up with us and Sydney had a ball using the crayons and putting them back in the little pockets then rolling it up for me to tie it for her. I think this is such a nice simple product for little ones. You should check out Freckles Galore on Etsy because she makes lots of other sweetly simple products too.

There are more prizes, but these are the ones that really stand out in my mind right now. I hope you enjoyed reading about them and will visit the blogs that hosted such great giveaways, as well as the companies that were generous enough to offer their products as giveaways.

I do have one other prize that I won that I will actually be giving away in turn. It was a Gift Certificate for Ecomom that I won in a review/giveaway hosted by Children Teaching Mama blog. I used the gift certificate to purchase a bunch of Plum Organics Baby Food Pouches that use the new Boon Dispensing Spoons. I will be giving away 1 free pouch with each order of 2 or more dispensing spoons from our website. Cool way of giving back...which is especially fun because I LOVE Plum Organics Baby Food so much! Look for a post all about that later this week!

Thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to read all the way down to this point :) I would love it if you shared your thoughts, as well as your personal entering and winning experiences. If you are a blogger hosting a giveaway, feel free to add a link in your comment too!

UPDATE (July 13, 2010): Just today I Won something else! I won the Little Looster Booster! This will be perfect to use in my baby store since we have lots of little people that need to use the potty, and since it doesn't have to be moved for adults to use the potty, it can just stay there. What a Very Cool device. I won it from Los Angeles Mama Blog.

Boon: Benders, Catch Bowls, and Grass ~ Helping Toddlers Learn to Self-feed

If your child is past the toddler stage, then you probably remember how they wore more of their food then they ate. That was most likely because it takes considerable skill for a toddler to scoop food up in a spoon, get it to their lips and into their mouth, without dumping the contents of the spoon about half-way through the process.

Try to do it yourself right now. Pay close attention to every move and twist that your arm, wrist, and hand has to do, while your mouth is also opening, your neck is tilting upward, and your shoulders are leaning forward...all while you are balancing food on a spoon! That is a lot for a little one to learn all at once. But there is one thing that makes this just a bit easier to learn and a little less messy too. It is the Bender Spoons by Boon, Inc.

I am amazed at the simple technology of the Benders. They allow you to bend the spoon or fork at an angle to make it easy to get the scoop-end of the utensil closer to the child mouth. This means they have one less twist and turn to maneuver while learning to feed themselves, which means more food makes it in their mouth and they feel more accomplished. The utensil will hold this angle for as long as your child needs it there. Then gradually as your child's motor skills develop you slowly bend the spoon or fork back towards a straight position.

This is simply ingenious, and what makes it even better is that you can bend the utensil to accommodate a right or left-handed child. We now carry them at The Baby Store Plus and I personally recommend the Benders to any mom who has a little one just beginning to learn to self feed.

Another Boon product that helps this process is the Catch Bowl. You can see the little girl is using a catch bowl in the picture above, with her Bender spoon. The Catch Bowl is sort of shaped like an upside-down baseball hat, so the brim of the 'hat' points towards the child...that way it can 'catch' any food that doesn't quite make it in your little ones mouth and neatly funnel it back down into the bowl. The Catch Bowl is made of a flexible soft material so it flexes when bumped. The bottom of the bowl even has a suction cup base so the bowl doesn't move around while your toddler is trying to scoop food or eat.

I tell you, Boon seems to think up the neatest ideas. Here is another neat idea that makes a great addition to any kitchen with infants or toddlers...its the Grass Countertop Drying Rack. It is not only a wonderfully functional kitchen aid, it is also just about the cutest thing you will have in your kitchen. What a great place to put your bottles, nipples, rings, Benders, and other small items to allow them to thoroughly air dry.

Many other cool Boon products are now available at The Baby Store Plus brick & mortar store in Cortez, Colorado or in our online store too!

Is your child nearing the self-feeding stage? Have you already gone through that stage and have fun stories to share? Please comment below, we'd love to hear from you!
